By Ginny Hogan. Find The "Romantic Moment". Start practicing dating in college. I agree. Especially the part about humility. Oh wait, I did. Why does all of this sound familiar to me? Because I was Kevin not too long ago, all through college and medical school. Man what I would give to have those 8 years of my life turn out differently. This is the big no-no when it comes to college romance.

Let me break it down for you: there will be a time in your life when you will be living alone in a big city, away from all of your friends. Also, people will be non-single. Good news: college is not that time. You are surrounded by cool people your own age all the time. They live right next door, or at most a 5min walk across campus. So when there are thousands of cute members of the opposite sex running around campus, do you set your heart on one of them and ignore the rest?

And then get massively depressed when that one says no? Well, I did that. And many of my friends and advisees did that.

You should rejoice in the fact that you are surrounded by babes, all of whom are single college women who are reading this: that goes for you, too. Life is good. The most likely thing a girl that age is going to do with her mind is to change it. Is something wrong with her? So if you want to succeed with a woman — however you define success for yourself, anywhere from getting a first date to getting some play to marrying her — you must take the lead.

You do not wait for the infinitesimal chance that the probability distribution function of her distracted mind will settle upon you as an object of desire. Because if you do, then she owns your ass. Kevin, my man, and all my boys out there: you must control the frame. And the frame is that you are the girl , not her. To wit: you are the object of desire. The prettier she is, the more this is true.

Do you think Elvis chased women? As an aside, Hef did chase one woman, and she required that he marry her, and she did own his ass for a decade or so. Kimberley Conrad was her name, for the record. The women are almost always doing the choosing. Heck, even Hef had to go all-in to nab that one girl he wanted.

So instead of chasing and being the seller, be the buyer. Adopt what I call the stance of the picky buyer. Instead of asking what should I do to make her like me , ask: What has she done for me lately? That one question changes everything. If you want to get her, you must want her less than she wants you. Pure and simple. Whoa nelly. They wanted to hook up with as many girls as possible, and didn't care about who they were hurting along the way.

It was hard to pull apart and try to comprehend. That is, until one day. I finally realized the importance of each of these people in my life. One failed relationship and many crushes later, I came to the realization that all of the guys I've ever been interested in have taught me important lessons about life and relationships. In high school, everyone knows everything. Relationships are rarely kept secrets, and couples become obvious when pairs walk hand-in- hand down the hallway.

Since these relationships are publicly known, dating exclusively is never a question. It is simply established and assumed. Once I got to college, each guy I was into made it clear that we weren't exclusive. Everyone says not to overgeneralize people, but the guys I've met in college have only wanted hookups.

Most of them seem to hate the idea of any type of commitment. It's frustrating, and it can seem impossible to get through the never-ending stream of terrible guys.

However, I'm optimistic that there are nice guys in college who do want relationships. They can't all be the same. College is nowhere near as structured and organized as high school is. The day doesn't start and end at the same time for everybody.

Instead, people's days begin when their first classes are scheduled, and they end after their last classes, meetings or practice. There's so much you can get involved in while you're in college. Having a schedule that complements that of your boyfriend's is nearly impossible.

There will even be days when too much work makes it difficult for you to see each other at all. You'll get frustrated and feel defeated. But that time apart can make your relationship grow stronger. It will make your time together feel more valuable. It will get better as long as both people in the relationship try to make time for each other.
